Hovingham - Howardian Hills Circuit Walk

The walk begins in Hovingham, a beautiful village which clearly shows the influence of the Worsley family who have owned the land for at least two centuries. There are remains of a Roman villa, which was discovered during landscaping of the grounds of the hall. The church dates back to Saxon times and there are still some parts from its early beginnings. If refreshment is needed there is the Malt Shovel in Main Street which has a useful web page for checking times of opening, menus etc. The walk starts on Park Street, passing between the pillars which once supported gates at the boundary of the village and follows the road towards Coulton for about a kilometre, passing a bridge in the middle of a field. The bridge once stood at the head of an ornamental lake in the hall's park, but it still looks so pretty that it is used as the introductory photo. After turning away from the road the walk becomes a delightful ramble following a stream, passing through meadows and woodland and most of it on south-facing slopes. This was especially nice as I did the walk on a bright, cold day in February and the sun was very welcome. The end of the walk follows the Ebor Way, named after Roman York - Eboracum. The views from the descent into Hovingham are stunning.
