Caistor and Nettleton, an Introduction to Geocaching Walk

Geocaching is an addictive hobby for GPS users. This walk is designed especially to act as an introduction to geocaching, but is a charming little walk in its own right.

The walk starts in the Georgian Market Place of Caistor, an originally Roman little town occupying an escarpment location on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Walking out of the town, we reach the site of our first geocache on a footpath running along the escarpment top, with long views out over the Trent Valley and the Vale of York.

After descending the hill, we skirt the downhill part of Caistor to pick up the next geocache, before heading out over open land (another two caches to be found en route) to the little village of Nettleton, where the next geocache can be found.

In Nettleton, we pick up the Viking Way and follow it back into Caistor, where a visit to the church allows us access to another cache, before returning to the marketplace, where there is an option for one last cache just a couple of minutes away.

Dog-walkers, please note the possible presence of livestock at some parts of this walk and one or two dog-unfriendly stiles.

if you wish to take the opportunity to geocache on this walk, before you set off you should register at www.geocaching.com and read the introductions. Then, you need to familiarise yourselves with the following caches which will be passed en route and either print them off, or download the details to your GPS:

Water Hills View
So long & thanks for all the fish
Billy Goat Gruff
Nettleton Nano (NB: at the time of writing, this cache was in need of maintenance, though it may be back when you do this walk).
Ironstone (this is about a kilometre off the route, though you may have time to divert)
Two little dickie birds sitting on a wall....
We Can See You! (another optional cache, a few minutes from the start and end).
