Broughton - Lower Tadmarton Walk

WalkExplorer

Starting from the entrance to the wonderful Broughton Castle Parkland, this walk is full of beautiful scenery in the lovely countryside of Oxfordshire. A short uphill climb through the castle grounds rewards the walker with a splendid view of the romantic-looking moated castle and the delightful church that stands just beside it. Both date back to the 14th and 15th Centuries and Lord and Lady Saye and Sele occupy the castle. Lord Saye and Sele is a descendant of William Fiennes, prominent in the Civil War. Further on, the route gives a good view from above of another interesting legacy, though it be somewhat more humble; that of Fulling Mill, once famous for local plush. Plush weaving was a rural industry around the nearby village of Shutford that survived for nearly two centuries. A narrow track leads right past the mill and crosses a bridge over the stream. Lower Tadmarton is the next place visited, scattered cottages here and there making it seem very remote. A road-walk skirts the village of Bloxham, the route then veering off on a bridleway on the edge of fields before again following the road that leads back to Broughton.
