Selworthy - Selworthy Beacon Walk

This short walk is perhaps suitable for the first evening of your holiday or even the morning of your departure. The route, on clear paths throughout, ascends the wooded hillside behind Selworthy Church to the open country at the summit of Selworthy Beacon. It passes a 'Memorial Hut' built in memory of Sir Thomas Acland (1787-1871), a former owner of Holnicote Estate, which now functions as a wind and weather shelter. The views from the summit are stunning: out to sea and west along the coast beyond Porlock; South Wales is usually visible; and inland there are good views of Dunkery Beacon. After a brief ridge walk the route returns to Selworthy along country lanes giving continuing good views towards Dunkery Beacon.

Birdlife is typical of the habitats; I encountered a couple of tame chaffinches by the war memorial and saw a buzzard overhead.
