Chaddleworth (West Berks) - Four Churches and Three Pubs - Circular Walk

You will be walking on the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the southern slope of the Berkshire Downs.

The idea behind this walk came from different sources: a) a request from a long-term and loyal Walkingworld member for more walks in Berkshire; b) writing and walking Walk 4624 on the Ridgeway just north of here and reading a book by John Betjeman’s daughter about her childhood there; and c) seeing a cluster of villages on the OS map that I had never heard of and which I hoped would make a good walk!

The walk turned out very well and offers the combination of attractive villages with thatched cottages and stately homes, interesting churches from different ages and quiet byways and lanes across miles of beautiful rolling countryside. On top of all that, there are three pubs, spaced out to suit your requirements, whether you prefer a break and a drink en route or at the end; details in Additional Information.

A great walk for me in this part of England includes sightings of deer, buzzards and / or red kite, larks, perhaps one other favourite bird like a stonechat or yellowhammer or lapwing and hares. This walk, on a lovely day in May 2008 scored ten hares and most of the others!
