Causey Pike and the mini-Coledale Horseshoe Walk

The Coledale Horseshoe is a Lakeland classic, but it's a long day out, especially in winter, when the days are short. This mini-horseshoe gives a good introduction to the Coledale, including the ascent of Causey Pike via Rowling End, before descending to the switchback ridge of Outerside, Stile End and Barrow.
The walk starts at Uzzicar and avoids the road by following the good track that leads up by Stonycroft Gill. The route leaves the track to cross the gill by the road-bridge, before taking a steep path towards the summit of Rowling End. A succession of small rock steps adds interest to this section. After Rowling End you take the path up the east ridge of Causey Pike. A short but enjoyable scramble takes you to the summit.

This is followed by a descent towards Outerside, with an option for the completists to continue high over Scar Crags. The route then heads east along Outerside, Stile End and Barrow, giving superb views across Coledale to Hopegill Head, Grisdale Pike and Sleet How, before descending towards Braithwaite. A very short section of road (less than 600 metres) takes you back to Uzzicar.

A fitting end to the day would be to descend the long ridge from Barrow towards Braithwaite Lodge at dusk on a cold, clear winter afternoon.

Do this walk in winter when days are short, or do it in summer when you don't have time for something longer. Use it as a reconnaissance for the real Coledale Horseshoe, or just do it because it makes a good walk out.
