Wandering in the Wolds: Millington to Huggate Wold Walk

Beginning in the picturesque North Yorkshire village of Millington, this walk allows you to taste this quiet corner of Yorkshire. The route takes in parts of the Minster Way, North Wolds Walk and the Wolds Way, along ancient tracks which attack the steep contours of these beautifully formed and intertwined valleys. Geologists will enjoy the hanging valleys and glacial erosion and there is evidence of early man-made earthworks in part of the walk. The terrain is typical of this area, being a mix of arable and pastoral farmland. There is always the opportunity for birdwatching and deer if you are lucky, but the best thing about this walk are the number of different views afforded from the paths along the ridges. Being circular in nature for the most part, the scope provides for a wide variety of terrain, from the farmland mentioned to deep woods leading back from Huggate Wold.

The ground can get very sticky in places, so take care and watch the weather, as it can change quickly in these foothills to the North York Moors and it is exposed in places. This route is also devoid of any villages and shelter, so you will need to be self-sufficient for your day out.

At the point where you retrace your steps to Millington, you can always return along the narrow country lane, which takes you directly back to the village. Whilst tarmacked, it is a pretty walk along the valley bottom and does pass Millington Wood, a small local nature reserve, which you can explore. In fact the road does avoid the sharp ascents and descents of the ridge walk at the beginning of the trail (personally I prefer taking the off-road route where possible).
