Ullock Pike - Longside Edge - Skiddaw Walk

WalkExplorer

Skiddaw at 3.055ft is Lakeland’s fourth highest peak and as with all mountain walks, should be given proper consideration before attempting it. That said, this is an excellent ascent by steadily climbing the shapely, interesting and well-defined ridge over Ullock Pike and Longside Edge, before a final push to reach the summit.

The walk offers excellent views throughout in good weather, including Bassenthwaite Lake and the north-western fells, as well as northwards over the Solway Firth to Dumfries and Galloway and not forgetting the superb views over Keswick to Derwent Water, then beyond to Borrowdale, in my humble opinion some of the best that Lakeland has to offer.

An added attraction to this particular route is the descent; this is in part by way of a gentler but seldom used, trackless lower ridge dividing two dales that are usually only frequented by ravens and sheep. This offers a further chance to take in the gentler views to the north in relative peace and tranquility.
