Alwinton and The Castles Walk

WalkExplorer

Choose a clear day for this walk to be rewarded by the many spectacular views along the way. The first section of the walk is along Clennel Street, a wide, well-defined footpath which slowly climbs past sites of ancient settlement. Although not steep, the climb is unrelenting, so pause frequently to admire the view. The track through Kidland Forest is military-maintained, so it is easy to follow. The most magnificent part of the walk is over moorland so do take care; be well-prepared as conditions can quickly change. It is also advisable to take a compass, but again the path is well-defined but narrow. This walk has everything including a stretch along the River Coquet. There is a sting in the tail - a really steep bit quite near the end. It is short and sharp, but as you look back you see one of my favourite views in the Cheviot Hills and just on the riverbank, you can make out the lumps and bumps left behind by a medieval village; it is well worth the effort.
