Barnes Bridge - Putney Walk

Barnes and Putney straddle the loop of the River Thames which forms part of the annual Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race. The walk takes us through chic and pricey Barnes before passing The Wetlands Centre. The central section takes us along the Embankment opposite Fulham Football Club, passing numerous boathouses belonging to clubs, schools and colleges. At Putney Bridge, St Mary's Church is the site of the 1647 Putney Debates, a fascinating period of history when the New Model Army (later suppressed by Cromwell) discuss the revolutionary concept of 'one man one vote'. Across the river is Fulham Palace. We walk through the park along the north side of the river and visit the palace, once the summer residence of the Bishops of London. Here there is a museum, extensive grounds and a secret botanic garden with herbs. Finally we walk through the old pottery-making area of Putney before ending our walk at Putney Bridge Underground, with its frequent connections to London.

This walk is also available free, recorded in real time by the contributor Robert Wright. You can download the sound file to your MP3 player at http://londonwalks.org or subscribe to the London Walks Podcast by searching for 'London Walks' on iTunes.
