Horton-in-Ribblesdale - Birkwith - Selside - Sulber Walk

WalkExplorer

From the popular village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, we walk the Pennine Way north over ancient drove roads in the shadow of Pen-y-Ghent. We stay with the Pennine Way for around 5km as it climbs to the moorland above Ribblesdale. There are great views across the dale to Inleborough and ahead to Ribblehead and Whernside.

Once we leave the Pennine Way at the remote farming hamlet of Birkwith, we drop down into greener pasture to cross the River Ribble at Selside.

The return, on the opposite side of Ribblesdale below Ingleborough, finds us in quite a different landscape. Here, the limestone is really evident and the limestone pavements around Sulber are everywhere. Great views of Pen-Y-Ghent (ahead) predominate as we drop down Sulber Nick back to Ribblesdale and refreshment in one of the village's pubs, or even the famous Pen-Y-Ghent Cafe, famous for its walker-friendly grub.

Dog-walkers please note the presence of sheep, cows and many dog-unfriendly stiles. Also, there is a short stretch (100m or so) along a relatively busy B road with no pavement.
