Sturminster Newton - Cutt Mill - Stour Valley Way Walk

Sturminster Newton - Bagber House Farm - Cutt Mill - Stour Valley Way

This is a walk for anyone with even the slightest interest in natural history. To begin with, there are easy lanes to go through with an abundance of wildflowers in places and intriguing views to watch out for. Then you swing back towards the river, crossing over the track of the now extinguished Stour Valley Railway on your way to Cutt Mill. This is a scene with a long and noisy weir, a large tranquil millpond and mill-house that someone failed rather spectacularly to repair.

When you start on your way back, you enter a wood filled with a myriad of insects and wildflowers, but you do have to watch your step in places. You emerge into vast acres of grassland and proceed for a couple of miles with the river more or less at your right elbow. There are dragonflies and damselflies and many other creatures all the way.

Across the river the sad remnants of the Stour Valley Line again put in their appearance and eventually, you come across it on your side when you go under an arch of the dismantled bridge. This is one of most beautiful, easy walks around and should not be missed.
