Masham, the River Ure and the River Burn Walk

The little market town of Masham (pronounced 'Mazz-mm') nestles in rolling countryside in Uredale, just outside the Yorkshire Dales, north of Ripon. Perhaps most famous for its connection with the Theakston brewing family, (being home to both the Theakston's and the Black Sheep breweries) it is also an excellent base for some splendid walking.

This walk starts in Masham's impressive market square and initially follows the route of the Ripon Rowel Walk (a local long-distance walk) along the banks of the River Ure. At the confluence of the Rivers Ure and Burn, we leave the Ure in favour of its tributary, which we follow for a few kilometres before striking away through pastureland. Soon, we pick up the Ripon Rowel once again and use this to return to Masham.

Dog-walkers please note that there are a number of dog-unfriendly stiles en route and a short, rocky scramble near water. There are also sheep aplenty, so please keep your pooch on a lead.
