Scout Scar - Helsington Walk

WalkExplorer

Many will just enjoy the fine views, but stop and think about how the valley below was formed and shaped. Some 300 million years ago this like much of England was under the sea. The sea bottom eventually became the sedimentary limestone forming the ridge. The glaciers carved out the Lyth Valley, which would have been a raging river. It now quietly meanders through the valley. The position of the ridge gives excellent views down to Morecame Bay and gives a panoramic view of the Lake District some 15 miles away. Visit the `mushroom` on the out or inbound route, and see the 360 degrees view. The walk drops down into the valley and takes you through Honeybee Wood and up to Helsington. Visit St John`s Church dating from 1726. Take time to picnic and use the plinths engraved with the fells and mountains, before walking back onto the ridge.
