Coningsby - Tattershall Castle - Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Walk

Coningsby - Tattershall Thorpe - Tattershall Castle - Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

The walk starts in the Lincolnshire village of Coningsby with its very distinctive one-handed church clock. It is the only one in the country and at 16.5ft across, the largest in the world. The hand itself is nearly nine feet long.

The walk then crosses open country to Thorpe Camp. This centre was formerly part of No 1 Communal Site, RAF Woodhall Spa and was constructed in 1940. It is now preserved by volunteers and is open to the public. A visit is highly recommended, but opening hours are limited. See www.angelfire.com/ms/thorpecamp for details.

From Thorpe Camp, the walk takes us directly into the Woodland Trust broadleaved woodland of Tattershall Thorpe Carr Wood for a lovely woodland walk. Look out for the many bomb blast shelters here and in its sister wood, Tattershall Carr Wood, revealing its RAF history. See www.woodland-trust.org.uk/broadleaf/leaffirst.asp?aid=33&issue=55 for more details.

After visiting the Tattershall Carrs, it's back towards Coningsby to pick up the River Bain (Horncastle Canal) for a lovely riverside stretch towards the National Trust property of Tattershall Castle, which makes for a distinctive landscape feature and (along with the adjacent Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity) is also well worth a visit. See www.nationaltrust.co.uk for more details.

From Tattershall Castle, you have the option to make a short diversion along the river to watch the waterskiing at Tattershall Water Sports Centre, before a walk across the wetlands to Coningsby and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre, with its WWII aircraft (see www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/visitorscentre.html for more details). The RAF Coningsby viewing area is just half a kilometre further down the road from the visitor centre.
