Market Bosworth Country Park Walk

Market Bosworth is a small and pretty town in Leicestershire. This walk commences in the Bosworth Country Park, a large area of parkland with a lake and a variety of ducks, swans, moorhens and an abundance of wild birds.

The park also contains an arboretum with many of the trees marked to show their individual species. The park is an ideal place for picnics and playing games with the children.

This walk leaves the park via fields and makes its way to Sutton Cheney, a small Leicestershire village. This village is close to the Bosworth Battlefield (see Walk 1973) and contains the lovely little Battlefield Church. Here King Richard III and his men passed by on the way to the battlefield and King Richard himself heard mass on the morning of the battle. In the church will be found battle emblems and a commemorative plaque.

Here too you will see the picturesque almshouses as you make your way up the church path. You will then return via more fields and an avenue of trees to pass through the arboretum and back to the lake in the park.

Depending on the height of crops you may see three memorials one a giant stone pillar bearing the figure of Hercules, which may have been put up originally by the fourth or fifth Baronet of Bosworth Park and could be 200 years old; also two memorial stones over a pit where three horses are buried. The sandstone plaques are now almost unreadable; the larger one refers to 'Trumps', charger of Capt. Norton Legge A R C; the smaller one reads 'In memory of 'Scots Grey'. ten seasons without a fall. Born 1876 died 1892. A trusty steed a faithful friend makes good the journey to the end'. Sadly no public path actually allows access to the memorials.
