Woolley Moor (Ogston Reservoir) - Brackenfield - Mathersgrave - Ogston Reservoir Walk

WalkExplorer

This is a comfortable short walk along quiet lanes, narrow roads and field-paths, even though it is quite close to a few small towns in the former Derbyshire coalfields area. It only goes to show that you don't have to be miles from anywhere to find peaceful quiet paths. The walk passes through the strangely named hamlet of Mathersgrave.

The main part of this walk was one I have known since very early in my walking life, often having been a Sunday afternoon stroll with my parents and sisters. I have extended the route for this walk to include a pub, The Plough on the Alfreton to Matlock Road (A615) just outside Wessington. This is more of a restaurant/ pub but walkers are welcome. The main bar area is carpeted so it might help the walkers' image by asking if they mind muddy boots before entering. I always carry sandals these days in my daypack. The pub offers a good menu and some choice beers including, on my visit, Abbot and Olde Speckled Hen. There is also a children's play area to the rear.

The return is mostly over field paths, all stiles were present and in good repair when walked, passing through the strangely named hamlet of Mathersgrave.
