Oddington - Noke - Ot Moor Walk

WalkExplorer

This wonderful walk is full of variations, steeped in history, and with a rich diversity of nature. Starting from Oddington Church, and taking a bridleway out of the village, soon to cross New River, the flat open land is sparsely farmed, and natural. Noke Wood is approached alongside fields, and the edge of it followed for some distance before being entered, its enveloping quietness, magical and eerie.

Ot Moor, once a low lying swamp, is a Nature Reserve, with areas of bog, still a habitat for rare species of butterflies, plants and insects, and a twitcher's paradise. Used by the military since the 1920s, the firing range is a danger area with red flag warnings when not safe to venture. The vast natural area of wetland and scrub meadows is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Part of the route is on Roman road, lengthy and straight, and there are nature trails with maps and information at intervals along the way. The Church of St. Andrew at Oddington dates back to the 13th century, beautiful and with many interesting features, and it is open to visitors.
